Musical Biographical Information

 

Musical Education: Shaun F. Hedgepeth, Ph.D. received instruction (music/drums-in chronological order) from Victor Robleto (1976-1977 at Neil Armstrong Elementary School in San Antonio, Texas), Hector Ponce (1977-1978 at Alan B. Shepherd Middle School in San Antonio, Texas), who was instructed by Fred Hoey-National Rudiment Champion, Neil Peart (on the Rush Hemispheres Tour 1978 in San Antonio, Texas), Ashley Patterson (of Oxford University-Magdalen College (1978 Oxford, England) Pete Barnicle of Broken Home in London (1980), England, Danny Solis (1978-1979 at Alan B. Shepherd Middle School in San Antonio, Texas), Frank Horejsi (1979-1982 at South San Antonio West Campus High School), Jeff Ryder (1978-1988 in San Antonio, Texas), Louis Bellson (during his 1983 drum clinic at Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, Texas), Stewart Copeland (on the Police Synchronicity Tour 1983-1984 in Austin, Texas), Kirk Scott (1983-1985) of Kirk Scott's Drum City (who was instructed by the late Fred Hoey-National Rudiment Champion), the late Fred Hoey-1983-1985 (National Rudiment Champion), the late Charlie Fox 1983-1985 (at Kirk Scott's Drum City in San Antonio, Texas), Steve Smith (on the Vital Information Tour-1984 at the West Avenue Ballroom in San Antonio, Texas), Ed Shauggnessy (during his 1988 Music Educators Convention at the Marriott River Center in San Antonio, Texas), and Roy Haynes (on his 1998 Tour at the Carver in San Antonio, Texas).

Musical Experiences: Shaun is a multi-award winning drummer in a multitude of drum, ensemble, and concert/band competitions. In 1980 as an award for winning a Jazz competition at Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas, Shaun and the South San Antonio West Campus High School (SSWC) Jazz Band were honored to play on the same stage as Maynard Ferguson. Another one of his most memorable awards was when he won "Best Drummer of San Antonio" in the 1985 Battle of the Bands that was held at the Sunken Gardens Amphitheater. While Shaun played with the Toys, they were the first and only Rock band to play at Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA) in front of twenty-five thousand people per night (One-hundred thousand people all four nights attend). This was a very historical event. Other memorable events are opening for Deep Blue Something, the Derek Trucks Band, the Urge, Monte Montgomery, Malford Milligan, and Some Other Jackson.

Shaun has recorded and played/toured with numerous bands from all genres of music. Here are a few to list: The Toys, Southern Comfort, Entre Nous, The Danny Cowan Group, The Wheels, The Byron West Band , Melodic Groove , Broken Home, Mr. Big, Papa Wood, Toe Jam, The Gregg Bly Band, Renegade, The Troy Dunn Trio, South San Antonio West Campus High School (SSWC) Jazz Band, Lance Allen and High Country (hear mp3) Lance Allen, ICU, the S & S Edition, the Laurel Heights United Methodist Church Choir, the Carol Strickland Variety Review, Pecos, El Val Mora Groupo, Spectrum, the Andy Caylo Group, Worm, Blue Canoe, the Conjunto Vatos, El Fairlanes, El Coronas, El Tejano Groupo, Vamos a Bailar, Arriba Sandino, and many more.

Shaun has been on numerous recordings, television, and radio for his drumming, and is currently playing with several different groups as an independent artist and gives drum lessons aside from being a Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio; the University of Phoenix, and Palo Alto College.

Shaun is the genuine "Professor on the drum kit."
